In the relation to Rai’s post from 19th February I need to admit that most creative ideas come after a particular time at night and I have just managed to sit down in front of my laptop, not necessarily on my own in the sitting room, and came up with some, I hope, relevant thoughts. Entrepreneurs, I would agree, create new business models and possibly enhancing the existing ones through adding extra values to the services they provide, changing the internal structures of the organisations, etc.
In the following post I would like to draw upon some issues connected with the current economic downturn linking it with the possible opportunities which are available for graduates despite the mass redundancies and unemployment across the country and concluding with the primary thoughts derived from the first few days of working in Rewired PR.
Since the current economic situation does not bring positive feelings for employees in most of the sectors in UK it has become extremely important to not only find the ways to progress but to overcome mass redundancies across the country. Relating this to Ruth’s blog post from 6 February the future of graduates from our city’s university may be affected by this as well. Thus, trying to escape the ruthless claws of reality I decided to get more engaged with some creative work which, I believe is best way to help my experience and enhance the chances of employment in UK’s creative sectors.
As soon as I started working in Rewired PR I, straight away, got involved in a few projects, starting from promotional campaign for Land Gold Women, whose film premiere took place on 12th February 2009 and then working through various small tasks concerning Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Having being involved in such projects I realised that PR is not only about completing the projects but it is about making them memorable for the clients and perhaps remarkable in terms of their final results. And it is not the case of completing a particular task like writing a press release or preparing another guest list but mostly it is about multitasking which in such a small business is a common thing. For example, the managing director is an entrepreneur who puts various hats on; finance hat, creative, managerial etc. It is a lot about multitasking which is a driving force for the effectiveness of projects undertaken.
After looking at some aspects of the structure and projects being carried out by Rewired it makes me think of some theories connected with cultural entrepreneurship, the definition of which is really difficult to specify in one sentence and the theory which is richly described in The Independents (Demos). However, there are key main factors which could describe the organisation as a whole. First of all, it is about being innovative and about remarkable ideas – even if these have been already implemented in the past the innovation lies in how such can be implemented in live projects. Secondly, the model of how to work is another key element. Taking on freelancers and apprentices, undoubtedly, helps bringing new ideas in and helps in diversifying the culture of the organisation. Thirdly, the use of technology – especially through the website’s blog and emails – encourages the interaction between the team and other people. Also, thanks to Web 2.0 application it is also possible to subscribe to RSS feeds and being notified about latest updates as long as someone has access to the computer or other wireless devices, such as phones or iPods.
Despite of the recession there is still place for individual development and improvement of skills. Such experience as the one at Rewired not only helps improve the knowledge but also enhances employability in most of the sectors within the UK. Furthermore, as we are facing really hard times at the moment, it has become highly important to put on many different hats on while being involved in various different projects in order to enhance productivity and decrease any additional costs. Thanks to my placement in Rewired, I know that this experience will bring many valuable thoughts and I am impatiently looking forward to the forthcoming projects.
